Youth Revolution Clan (YRC) and Cultural Infusion Australia brought the Lahore International Conference on Culture back for a second edition in September 2017, with a programme centred on cultural diversity, interfaith harmony and heritage.

The three-day conference was scheduled for 27 to 29 September at the Lahore Arts Council on Mall Road, according to a listing on ASEF culture360, the Asia-Europe Foundation’s arts and culture portal.

It followed the first conference, organised by the same partners in July 2016.

Who was it for?

The organisers said the event aimed to bring together research scholars, practitioners and learners to exchange ideas, findings and possible collaborations.

They also wanted it to examine how culture shapes politics and society, including how meaning is shaped and contested through institutions such as the media, education, law and religion.

What was on the agenda?

  • The role of culture in implementing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • Multicultural cities and the challenges of urban governance
  • Culture, nationalism and accepting cultural diversity
  • Social cohesion and interfaith harmony
  • The global impact of culture
  • The role of government in preserving tangible and intangible cultural heritage
  • Culture and modern media
  • The cultural impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

The programme announced in advance also included exhibitions and presentations covering more than 50 cultures, intended to give participants a practical understanding of cultural diversity.

Diplomatic backing

Australia’s High Commissioner to Pakistan sent a message congratulating YRC on hosting the second edition of the conference.

Why Lahore?

The ASEF listing describes Lahore as Pakistan’s second-largest metropolitan area and a major centre of culture, education and publishing, home to many temples, mosques, churches and shrines.
